Chapter 9: Backpressure

Harness engineering

When an agent makes a mistake, you don't just ask it to try again. You change its environment so that mistake can't easily happen again: a line in its instructions, a script it can run, a check it has to get past.

Retrying fixes this one mistake, today. A change to the harness fixes that mistake for every future session, including ones you never watch.

Say it to your agent

“You committed a generated file again. Don't just remove it: add it to .gitignore, add a line to AGENTS.md, and add a pre-commit check that fails if anything under dist/ is staged.”
