Chapter 1: The machine

Source code and programs both live in the same place.

Files and folders

Also called Directory

A file is a named chunk of data kept on a computer. A folder, also called a directory, is a named container for files and other folders, so everything on the machine forms one big tree.

A code project is only a folder of files, and nearly everything an agent does is read, change, create or delete them. It can touch dozens in a minute, so you need to know the tree well enough to notice when it strays outside the job.

Say it to your agent

“List the folders you plan to change before you start. Stay inside src/checkout/, and tell me first if you need to touch anything outside it.”

The workshop

Name a word, or describe what you mean in everyday language.
