Chapter 16: Shipping and running

Artefact

Also called Artifact, Build artifact, Release artifact

The finished output of a build, stored with a version so that you can move exactly that thing between environments. A bundle, a zip, a container image.

If you build again for production, what you tested isn't what you ship. Build once and move the same artefact along, and a pass in staging says something real about production.

Say it to your agent

“Have CI build once on merge and label the output with the commit SHA. Staging and production both deploy that same artifact, with no second build in the deploy job. Show me that the hash matches on both sides.”
